5 Keys to Coping With a Chicago Traumatic Brain Injury

October 19, 2011

If you are one of the 1.7 million people who suffer a brain injury each year, you may find that life following the accident is difficult to navigate. Here are five ways to assist you in coping following a Chicago traumatic brain injury:

Group Therapy .

Find a support group, full of fellow victims and qualified medical professionals, where you feel comfortable expressing your emotions and discussing your issues.

Extra Time & Rest.

Understand that you may not be able to complete tasks or go through your day in the same manner as you did before the Chicago head injury. Anticipate that you may need periods of rest throughout the day.

Request Accommodations.

School Accommodations. If you are a student, discuss test or classroom accommodations. The school may need to provide you with a quiet room free of distractions, as well as increased time to finish assignments.

Work Accommodations. If you are an employee, discuss with your employer ways that your job responsibilities can be revised to accommodate your short term limitations /disabilities. For example, you may need to work on only one task at a time rather than multi-tasking.

Be patient as you adjust to life after the Chicago head trauma.

Recognize that you may not be able to live your life exactly as you did before the accident. There are many resources available as you learn to  adjust or re-learn how to go about your days.
