Chicago Car Accidents Related To Sleep Deprivation
Lack of sleep has been blamed for up to 30% of motor vehicle accidents.
The research, conducted at NASA”s Ames Research Center, found that a set of eye-movement measures can be used to detect small neural deficits.
It may also distinguish sleep-related impairment from that due to brain injury.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that drowsy driving was responsible for 72,000 car accidents that caused 44,000 injuries and 800 deaths in 2013.
A report by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety suggests that drivers who sleep only 5 or 6 hours a day are twice as likely to crash as drivers who get 7 hours of sleep or more.
“If you have not slept seven or more hours in a given 24-hour period, you really shouldn’t be behind the wheel of a car,” says Jake Nelson, director of Traffic Safety Advocacy & Research for AAA.
