Concussion Recovery Predicted

July 6, 2019

FDA: Concussion & blood Test To Assist With Concussion Evaluations

Just over 1-year ago, FDA authorized first blood test to aid in the evaluation of concussion in adults.

Today, Research: Concussion & Blood Biomarker for Predicting Concussion Recovery

Now, a small study published online in Neurology showed blood-based inflammation biomarker predicted  concussion symptom recovery time.

The study involved 43 high school and college football players who had concussions. Author of study, Timothy B. Meier, PhD,  a member of the American Academy of Neurology, states:

“With so many people sustaining concussions and a sizeable number of them having prolonged symptoms and recovery, any tools we can develop to help determine who would be at greater risk of problems would be very beneficial, so these results are a crucial first step.”

However, Michael Alosco, PhD, of Boston University, who was not involved with the study, told MedPage Today :

“These inflammatory markers actually might be very important for identifying who does go on to have prolonged problems or delayed recovery…. What you really need is a panel of biomarkers that can start to tease apart different causes.”

Concussion or Mild Traumatic Brain Injury

A car accident and fall two of the leading causes of  brain injury in the US and may occur when:

  • Head being struck by an object

  • Head striking an object

  • Brain acceleration / deceleration without direct external trauma to head

  • Initially, notable by at least one of the following symptoms :

    1. Coma

    2. Loss of consciousness (less than 30 mins)

    3. Loss of memory (just before or after accident)

    4. Altered mental state – e.g., dazed or disoriented

    5. Cognitive or Neurological deficits

    6. Headaches

    7. Dizziness or Blurred vision

    8. Vomiting or Nausea

    9. Loss of sleep

    10. Difficulty with numbers

    11. Memory loss

    12. Depression

    13. Sensitivity to light or sound

    14. Personality changes

15 and the symptom(s) cannot be completely accounted for by other causes.

You need NOT have all the above symptoms to establish evidence of concussion or Mild Traumatic Brain Injury
