Why would a neurologist send a traumatic brain injury patient for a neuropsychological or psych exam

A neurologist may refer a traumatic brain injury patient out for a neuropsychology or psychological exam in IL if he or she believes based on patients symptoms and exam – is reasonable and necessary treatment.  For example, if the patient exhibiting and or describing psychological or emotional issues beyond the neurologists area of expertise then the neurologist may require a psych exam before continuing to t treat the patient.

The neurologist may also want a psychologist to rule out a possible preexisting or contributing psychological problems. For instance, if patient reports feeling depressed or angry. A psychologist may be helpful

The neurologist could also refer the patient out for neuropsychological testing if the patient is experiencing or showing signs of cognitive deficits after the Illinois brain injury car accident or slip and fall.
